James Boother Introduces TVPs
03 November 2008
James Boother spoke on Table Value Parameters at the UK SQL Server User Groups November Meeting
Databases play an increasingly important part in our business lives. Not only does business success increasingly depend on the quality of the databases we operate but also on those databases’ agility in being able to provide the right information as and when we need it.
And, when databases are corrupted – or stolen, as has happened a number of times in the past year with some ‘high profile’ public sector databases – both the operational efficiency and credibility of the organisation that owns them is called into question.
It was against this background that James Boother, managing director of software developer Live Software Solutions (LSS) addressed The UK SQL Server User Group (www.sqlserverfaq.com) at its October meeting at the Microsoft office in Victoria, London. James Boother was invited to speak at the event by Christian Bolton of Coeo, a company formed to focus on ‘deep-dive’ technical engagements to complement existing teams within Microsoft's customers and services partners.
The User Group examined SQL Server 2008 – the latest version of this popular database - and James Boother spoke on ‘the table value parameter (TVP) additions to SQL Server 2008’, taking a detailed look at how to use TVPs compared with the options available in previous versions of SQL Server (SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005).
“SQL Server 2008, launched in February 2008, brought new features for resource management and better instance isolation,” said James Boother, who has been using SQL Server since 2000 in a variety of enterprise applications. “Making best use of these features is key to the success database development projects where customers want to maximise their investment in SQL Server.
“Understanding the metrics to characterise database and resource use, including transaction throughput, availability and security requirements, are just some of the factors that you should consider when determining the use of these new features.”
James Boother’s company, which holds Microsoft Certified Partner status, develops and delivers software for, among others, the insurance and publishing sectors.

LSS Expands – Back To Its Historical Roots
30 October 2008
LSS has seen its business expand in recent months. That expansion has prompted it to move its headquarters from St Albans to The Old Forge in Hatfield Park.
“Not only does this move give us the extra working space and facilities that we need in order to meet our current commitments, it also offers us scope for even further expansion to meet orders which are in the pipeline,” commented LSS’s managing director, James Boother.
The Old Forge – complete with its exposed roof beams - comprises a distinctive and historic site for LSS’s new headquarters.
It is close to Hatfield House, a Jacobean mansion built on the site of the Royal Palace of Hatfield which, among other things, was the childhood home of both the future Edward VI and Queen Elizabeth I. Since 1611, it has been the home of the Cecil family and is currently the home of Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, the 7th Marquess of Salisbury.
Mike Goatly, LSS’s technical director, commented: ““In those days, the forge, or smithy, was the powerhouse of the economy. In many ways, software has taken over that role – so it’s appropriate that our company is now based in the Old Forge.”

Notes to Editors:
About Hatfield House
Hatfield House is built on the site of the Royal Palace of Hatfield which, among other things, was the childhood home of both the future Edward VI and Queen Elizabeth I.
Indeed, the Queen Elizabeth Oak on the grounds of the estate is said to be the location where Elizabeth was told she was Queen following Mary's death. In November 1558, Elizabeth held her first Council of State in the Great Hall.
The palace, built in 1497 by the Bishop of Ely, was later seized – along with other church properties - by Henry VIII. The present Jacobean house was built in 1611 by Robert Cecil, First Earl of Salisbury and Chief Minister to King James I and it has been the home of the Cecil family ever since. It is currently the home of Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, the 7th Marquess of Salisbury.
The Third Marquess of Salisbury was three times Prime Minister during the closing years of Queen Victoria's reign.

Divelements LiveTrace Case Study
17 April 2006
LiveTrace is mentioned in a case study on the Divelements website
In December 2004, Live Software Solutions started a small project called LiveTrace indented to provide a replacement for Sysinternals DebugView, offering automatic indentation and analysis of method calls in addition to the capture of Win32 debug messages. Over the following year the concept of what LiveTrace was and the features it should provide grew substantially, including many more analysis options and advanced features such as the addition of a fast custom messaging engine and a utility to automatically instrument compiled assemblies.
As the functionality of LiveTrace increased, so did the amount of information and configuration options that needed to be presented to the user. As the target audience were developers, an interface similar to Microsoft’s Visual Studio offerings seemed to make most sense, but the drawback to this approach was that it was going to take considerable time to implement the required toolbar and docking windows controls. To avoid having to drop features from LiveTrace, the decision was taken to purchase third party components.
The key features that were going to make a set of components acceptable for use in LiveTrace were runtime responsiveness, richness of features, ease of implementation and extensibility to meet our specific needs. Several component vendors were initially investigated, but SandBar and SandDock from Divelements were quickly singled out as being the best match for all our requirements. Both were easily integrated with LiveTrace - the design-time experience proved to be exceptional and the programmatic interfaces were such that everything operated exactly as a user of Visual Studio would have expected it to.
In summary, Divelements provided a set of components that have allowed us to focus on adding LiveTrace features without having to worry about writing the UI infrastructure. SandBar and SandDock were excellent value for money; new features have been added to them on a regular basis and on the rare occasion we've needed it, the support service has been both prompt and effective.
LiveTrace Launches
03 February 2006
Live Software Solutions Limited Launch LiveTrace a .NET Profiling Tool
Live Software Solutions Limited today announces the launch of LiveTrace, a new .NET application profiler that allows developers to analyse debug and performance information in real-time.
LiveTrace makes it quicker and easier for software developers to debug and analyse performance issues in their applications.
Preparing applications for profiling is made easy using the wizard provided. Once the application has been prepared LiveTrace uses an optimised, custom built messaging architecture to capture method timings, method parameter data and thread CPU usage.
“We hope that LiveTrace will revolutionise the profiling experience for developers giving them real-time graphical analysis of the performance of their applications” says Mike Goatly, Technical and Operations Director, Live Software Solutions Limited.
LiveTrace is available for trial download from the Live Software Solutions website http://www.livesoftwaresolutions.com and has a suggested retail price of £300.00 plus VAT.
